Davidoff Cigars: Over 100 Years of Tobacco History
The name Davidoff stands like no other for fine cigars and elegant smoking accessories. The brand was founded by Zino Davidoff, a true pioneer of the tobacco scene. Born in 1906 into a family of tobacco merchants, Zino grew up with a deep passion for tobacco. After his family fled antisemitic pogroms in Ukraine and settled in Switzerland, his father Henri opened a tobacco shop in Geneva. As a child, Zino learned the trade from the ground up.

Zino was curious and enterprising. On his travels through Central America and Cuba, he immersed himself in tobacco production. Back in Geneva, he applied his knowledge and developed the first air-conditioned humidor to store cigars in optimal conditions—an idea inspired by the tropical air he encountered on his journeys. This made Davidoff the go-to destination for aficionados.
Zino Davidoff: Visionary and Thought Leader
His expertise and drive for innovation earned Davidoff worldwide acclaim. Even during World War II, he offered Cuban cigars, having bought large stocks early on. In 1946, he launched his first own cigar line, named after renowned wine estates—laying the foundation for the brand’s identity.
The Cuban Chapter and a Radical New Beginning
Davidoff entered a partnership with Cubatabaco that lasted until 1989. Then Zino pulled the plug: in protest against declining quality, he destroyed cigars worth millions. But by that time, Davidoff had already become a global player. In collaboration with partner company Oettinger from Basel, production was moved to the Dominican Republic, from where Davidoff redefined the cigar world.
A New Chapter: Dominican Excellence
Following the relocation, seven new series were developed that quickly gained popularity. Other manufacturers like Dunhill followed Davidoff’s example. At 74, Zino also founded another business under his name for luxury items such as perfumes, leather goods, and watches.
