Ashton Pipes: Bestseller
Ashton Pipes: Alle Artikel
Imagine a 15-year-old boy starting as a turner at Alfred Dunhill in 1959. This moment marked the beginning of an extraordinary career in pipe making for William Ashton Taylor, the creator of the legendary Ashton pipes.
Ashton Pipes: The Story of a British Icon
William, or simply "Bill," began his training at Dunhill Pipes with the most basic tasks: sweeping up briar scraps, fetching tea, and running errands. However, his enthusiasm for the craft quickly became apparent. After work, he often took discarded pipe bowls and mouthpieces home to practice his skills. Over time, the master craftsmen recognized Bill's talent. Harry Saigrott, one of the most experienced colleagues, noticed his potential and taught him the art of mouthpiece making. Other craftsmen followed suit, sharing their knowledge with him.
From Apprentice to Master
In the early 1980s, Bill decided to establish his own brand. His goal? Perfection in pipe making! With his extensive expertise and a British patent for innovative manufacturing techniques, he set new standards. His pipes are 12–14% lighter than many others and provide an unparalleled smoking experience. He placed particular emphasis on choosing the best materials and meticulous craftsmanship for both pipe bowls and mouthpieces.
Hand-Selected Briarwood: The Soul of Every Ashton Pipe
Bill Ashton Taylor paid special attention to the selection of wood. Twice a year, he traveled to Italy to inspect briarwood from Calabria and Tuscany. Calabrian wood, known for its hardness and lightness, was used for smooth-finished pipes with impressive cross-grains and birdseye patterns. For sandblasted models, he preferred Tuscan briarwood, which developed a tactile surface reminiscent of earlier Dunhill Shell Briar pipes.
Oil Curing: The Secret to Exceptional Flavor
Inspired by Dunhill, Bill perfected the "oil curing" technique for Ashton pipes. This involves heating the briar bowls and soaking them in natural oils. This two-week process removes residues and imparts the wood with its distinctive nutty flavor, making Ashton Pipes truly unique.

Tradition and Future
After William Ashton Taylor's passing in 2009, his former employee Jimmy Craig took over. With great respect for Bill's legacy, he ensures that Ashton continues to stand for superior quality. The pipe community has praised his work, and connoisseurs appreciate the enduring passion infused into every pipe.
