The Dane A. H. Riise was not only a pharmacist but also a researcher. During his 30 years on the island of St. Thomas, he explored unknown plants and herbs. However, Riise became famous primarily for his rum.

Albert Heinrich Riise, as his full name goes, was a curious person. After his training at the pharmacy in his hometown of Ærøskøbing, he moved to Copenhagen, where he studied botany and chemistry—fields that were still relatively young at the time.

A decisive turning point in his life came in 1838 when Riise received an offer to go to the Caribbean, which was still part of Denmark at the time. On the Virgin Islands, he quickly made a name for himself as a pharmacist. Riise took advantage of the region's rich flora and fauna, and his products were well received in the Antilles.

He became particularly famous for his rum. And for good reason: His exquisite varieties, such as Non Plus Ultra, are highly regarded by rum enthusiasts worldwide. On St. Thomas, Riise learned the art of distillation, which immediately fascinated him as a pharmacist.

At that time, rum was not only enjoyed as a beverage but also used as a remedy for ailments like stomach problems. With his unique creations, Riise even won awards in his native Denmark.
