Butz Choquin Pipes: The Roots in Saint Claude

In 1858, the foundation for the renowned brand Butz Choquin was laid in Metz. Today, the company is based in Saint Claude in the French Jura and is considered the world’s oldest pipe manufacturer still in operation. The history of Butz Choquin is closely tied to the development of Saint Claude, known as the birthplace of the briar pipe.

According to legend, a French pipe maker once traveled to Corsica to visit Napoleon's birthplace. When his fragile meerschaum pipe was damaged along the way, a local craftsman carved him a new one from briar root. Impressed by its excellent smoking properties, he brought the idea back to Saint Claude. This marked the beginning of the briar pipe's story.

A Glimpse into the World of Butz Choquin

The briar root quickly became the preferred material for pipes, and the pipe industry in Saint Claude grew rapidly. By 1911, nearly 28 million pipes were produced there annually, and by 1920, this number had risen to an impressive 43 million.

Even today, thousands of pipes leave Saint Claude each year, including brands like Chacom, which are made there. The first Butz Choquin pipe was an artistic reading pipe with silver accents and a stem made of albatross bone. Over time, the range evolved to include a variety of classic shapes like Billiard, Apple, Bulldog, Bent, or Canadian.

Innovation Meets Tradition: Butz Choquin Pipes

Pipe production at Butz Choquin combines traditional craftsmanship with modern designs. The range includes colorful pipes with innovative finishes and acrylic stems as well as models with intricately rusticated finishes. Despite modern machinery, the production process still relies heavily on skilled craftsmanship. Interestingly, a large part of the work has traditionally been done by women.
