Design Berlin: High-Quality Pipes from Thuringia
Design Berlin pipes are widely available in Germany, as they are distributed through Planta Tobacco Manufactory, whose products can be found in many specialty stores.
The brand was founded in 1948 by Hubert Hartmann as Pfeifenstudio Hartmann in Berlin. Many of the first employees came from Ruhla, the former center of German pipe manufacturing in Thuringia. Initially, the focus was on affordable, small shag pipes with nylon mouthpieces, designed for fine-cut tobacco. In 1954, Lothar Schirwitz joined the company, gradually steering it toward high-quality pipes with Danish designs.
The Evolution of Design Berlin Pipes
Over time, an increasing amount of high-quality briarwood from Greece was used, which, after long aging, offers a better smoking experience than simpler wood types. In 1975, the brand was renamed DB Design Berlin, and the 9-mm filter chamber became increasingly common in their pipes. Schirwitz was not only a dedicated operations manager but also an innovative freehand pipe maker.
Key Changes
In the early 1980s, Planta Tobacco Manufactory, under Dr. Manfred Obermann, took over the factory, leveraging synergies with tobacco sales.
Through this acquisition, DB also gained international recognition. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, DB took over the production facilities of VEB Pfeifen und Holzerzeugnisse Bad Liebenstein (HOWAL) and relocated to the former premises of C. S. Reich in Schweina – once Germany’s largest pipe factory.
Design Berlin Today
Today, Martin Schmalz leads production with a team of 12 employees. Producing around 30,000 pipes annually, DB is the second-largest pipe manufacturer in Germany, right behind Vauen. This allows DB to continue Thuringia’s pipe-making tradition while preserving a significant piece of German craftsmanship.
Distinctive Features of DB Pipes
A signature feature is the dual smoke channel in the mouthpiece, ensuring an exceptionally cool and even smoking experience. The designs range from classic to innovative – models like the "Globe" are particularly iconic. In addition to series pipes, exclusive freehand models are also crafted.
All pipes come with high-quality acrylic mouthpieces and feature a 9-mm filter bore. Various surface finishes are available: smooth-stained, lacquered, sandblasted, and intricately rusticated. Special models such as Holger Danske, NOS unique pieces, and the Limited Edition "Le Cœur de la France" are particularly popular.
Design Berlin: Tradition and Innovation
With modern laser engraving technology, pipes can be custom-marked or produced as private label items for retailers. DB also excels in silver craftsmanship – genuine silver spigot pipes are particularly affordable here. Whether reliable everyday companions or artistic one-of-a-kind pieces, Design Berlin pipes offer a wide selection for both beginners and seasoned pipe smokers across all price ranges.
