Philosophers and Connoisseurs: From Epicurus to Epicure
The Greek philosopher Epicurus developed a unique philosophy centered around conscious enjoyment. His perspective on life was so influential that the term „epicure“ in English has become synonymous with a bon vivant. Epicurus and his followers gathered in a garden in Athens to exchange ideas—naturally accompanied by good food and wine, as was customary among the ancient Greeks. Just think of Plato’s famous symposia.
However, Epicurus' teachings were often misunderstood: His focus on the joy of life did not mean indulgence in excess but rather the avoidance of pain, fear, and deprivation. For him, a life of balance, free from unnecessary worries, was paramount.
Enjoyment in Moderation
Excessive luxury was foreign to Epicurus—dependence on wealth contradicted his philosophy. Today, he could almost be considered a minimalist. In his garden, simple foods such as bread, cheese, and wine were on the table—typical of the Mediterranean way of life.
The idea of Epicurus as an extravagant hedonist likely belongs to the realm of myths. In reality, he was the philosopher who saw moderate enjoyment as the key to a fulfilled life. If he were alive today, he would surely be a passionate aficionado.
Epicure Cigars – Enjoyment With Great Value for Money
It’s no surprise, then, that his name inspired a cigar brand. The Epicure AR—the abbreviation referring to Armando Ramos—are Puros from Ecuador, made from the same tobacco leaves as significantly more expensive premium brands. The difference? They didn’t pass the strict visual quality controls. In terms of flavor, however, they offer excellent cigars at an unbeatable price.
