Exclusiv Pipe Tobacco: The Origins
On December 24, 1902, Alois Pöschl founded the "Brasiltabakfabrik A. Pöschl & Cie." in Landshut. With limited capital, he began producing Schmalzler snuff tobacco, a traditional Bavarian specialty. The location on the Isar River also enabled the operation of tobacco mills.
Around 1920, Pöschl introduced a trademark: a "P" inside an octagon. The product range quickly expanded, soon including the tobacco-free "Schneeling" and the Schmalzler "Doppelaroma," which remains a bestseller to this day.
Challenges, Reconstruction, and Growth After 1948
World War II posed major challenges for the company. After the war, Wilhelm and Alois Pöschl took over management, secured raw materials, and rebuilt the destroyed production facilities.
With the 1948 currency reform, the product range was expanded to offset losses. Hansa Krüll Pipe Tobacco and Adria fine-cut tobacco were introduced. Pöschl increasingly focused on pipe tobacco and, in the mid-1960s, launched the Exclusiv series, elevating the company to a new level.
Internationalization, Innovation, and Expansion
In 1979, the third generation took over the company's leadership and built a global distribution network. In 1995, a state-of-the-art production facility in Geisenhausen was established to meet growing demand.
In 1971, Pöschl introduced the internationally successful snuff brand "Gletscherprise." This was followed in 1994 by the "Red Bull" fine-cut series. In 2006, the additive-free fine-cut tobacco "Pueblo" was introduced, followed by the company's own cigarette production in 2008.
Exclusiv and Pöschl: Development to the Present Day
Since 2006, the fourth generation has been leading the company. Under their management, new products such as Pueblo fine-cut tobacco were introduced, and the international presence expanded to over 100 countries. In 2011, Pöschl achieved the highest sales volume in its history, exceeding 6,000,000 kg.
Today, Pöschl is a market leader in snuff and pipe tobacco, consistently focusing on innovation and tradition. In 2012, production capacity in Geisenhausen was expanded with a new hall.
